Jesse McElwain is a third-year student in the College of Architecture, Art and Planning. His involvement with Cornell University Sustainable Design began with the design and production of pamphlets for the 2009 Solar Decathlon house. Now a Team Leader for both the Schoolhouse: South Africa project and the Sustainable Research Facility project, Jesse stays involved with both CUSD projects. In addition, he remains devoted to CUSD, and serves as Publicity & Outreach Director to ensure the organization itself is maintained. A member of several student groups across campus, he is active in public speaking and has been invited to give presentations and participate in panel discussions on various topics.

Dara Perl has been a member of Cornell University Sustainable Design since its founding after the 2009 Solar Decathlon Competition. He has industrial experience in the power engineering field, working with National Grid during his co-op assignments, performing mechanical and maintenance engineering support work for the numerous power station on Long Island.

I was born and raised in New York City. When I came to Cornell, I was originally undecided in Arts and Sciences but transferred to Civil and Environmental Engineering after my freshman year. I became interested in sustainability when I visited University of California San Diego and learnt about their efforts to become a climate neutral campus. Now I’m interested in structural design and analysis, and I see CUSD as an amazing opportunity to advance my knowledge of sustainable building practices and technologies.

Jessica has been a member of CUSD since 2008. Since joining the team freshman year, she has focused on renewable energy through various research initiatives and project teams. Most notably she founded the Windy Island campaign on Long Island, NY and developed a concentrated solar cooker for use in Nicaragua. Carol is excited to be able to apply her knowledge in engineering to her interest in architecture and sustainable building design. Chi-Chi Lin got involved with CUSD after visiting the Silo House in Syracuse. She works with both projects as a logistics officer and the graphics and branding subteam leader. Extremely interested in vernacular building systems, she designed, built, and led a team to build a waterfront pavilion in Bangladesh for Panigram Resort. Caio Barboza was born in Brazil and is a junior architecture student at Cornell University. His desire to become an architect has been influenced by his early passion - Taekwondo. For eight years, Caio practiced Taekwondo and later became a member of the Brazilian National Olympic team for the competition in the 2008 Olympics. Now, he translates the very elements of Taekwondo (form, movement, technique, and space) to create something outside his own body - structures. In addition to designing, Caio enjoys traveling and listening to music.

I am from New York City. I have always been in awe of the city no matter how long I have lived there, by the architecture, by the layout, by the interactions of the structures. The work done by CUSD there affected my application to Cornell and inspired me to try out for the team in the Fall. Though he hails from the beautiful tropical island of Sri Lanka, Ranjeev grew up mostly in Dubai and Singapore. He studied Mechanical Engineering and Business as an undergrad, and is now after a Master's degree in Systems Engineering. An enthusiast of energy sustainability, he currently researches aeroelastic wind power-harvesting at Cornell's Laboratory for Intelligent Machine Systems, and his previous project, Vibro-Wind Power, featured in the NY Times 2010 Year in Ideas review. In 2010, he also helped size a hybrid biogas/solar power solution for Panigram Resort, an eco-resort in Bangladesh. In his spare time, Ranjeev enjoys snowboarding and following cricket, as well as road tripping to new places and rocking out to the likes of Deadmau5.

I grew up in Sherborn, MA but have recently moved to the Chicago area. I have two older sisters and a younger brother. I am a Junior majoring in Natural Resources and minoring in Business here at Cornell.
I have always been interested in energy efficiency and sustainability and hope to someday have a career in this field. I am proud to be part of the CUSD project team and working towards building the Sustainability Research Facility here on campus. I am on the Business and Communications Team.

Amanda will be working for Deutsche Bank in their Human Resources division after graduation.

Whitney is a sophomore pursuing a BS in Chemical Engineering with a healthy fascination for renewable energy. She hopes that projects such as this one will ultimately facilitate the integration of modern technology in communities worldwide. Whitney is currently conducting research on nanocrystal solar cells with the Hanrath group and seeks to explore other avenues of energy capture.

I am interested in developing environmentally-friendly ways of living: buildings, community planning, energy technology, and coordinating leadership-development programs.

Mina Amundsen

Mina Amundsen is the University Planner for Cornell since 2002. She directs the Campus Planning Office, which leads and oversees master planning for the Ithaca campus, as well as physical planning associated with capital projects and campus-wide landscape and transportation. Mina is the leader of the Land Focus Area for Cornell's Climate Action Plan. She is actively engaged in campus-community initiatives on regional sustainable development and land conservation with local municipal planning directors and other agencies. Her research interests include the challenges of engaging sustainability at a planning level with land use, landscape and infrastructure, and integrating development, preservation, and resource conservation at local and regional scales.

"Cathy Emilian, practices interior designer in Ithaca, NY. She holds a BS in Interior Design from Cornell (2003) and a BS in Art Education from Mansfield University. She is ASID’s Design Community Leader for the Southern Tier and a LEED Accredited Professional.
Most recently she designed for Ithaca’s Kitchen Theater – a performing arts theater registered for LEED certification. Other independent projects include The Smart Monkey Café and Cinemapolis Theater. While employed at Egner Architectural Associates, GA Architects and JSA Architects, projects included renovation of Ithaca High School’s Kulp Auditorium, industrial, university, restaurant and residential projects."
