1st Day of School and Final Design Drawings

Hi all,

Hope everyone had a wonderful winter break (or summer for our readers in the southern hemisphere)!

It’s the first semester of school at our ECD center!! Here are a few photos James Urdang from Education Africa shared with the team. Thanks to Robyn Wienand of Play-With-A-Purpose, our ECD Center’s teachers are ready to take on our very first group of students. Check out the pictures Robyn sent us.

It’s a strange feeling to know that children are actually playing in a garden we constructed and learning within the walls of classrooms we built only half a year ago. To reminiscence, I’ve uploaded pages from the final design proposal booklet CUSD team member Andrew Fu, ’14 and his team put together spring semester 2011. The design proposal, images, photographs, and drawings are credited to: Andrew Fu, Nicholas Cassab-Gheta, Manuela Garcia, Abigail Jean, Lingbo Sun, Yoana Taseva (all undergraduate architecture students, class of ’14).

This proposal was refined, updated, and translated into working drawings by a Shuping Liu, ’14 leading a small team of student volunteers.

Enjoy this beautiful set of drawings!

  1. Inesa says:

Very noble of you. How wonderful that people like you exist in this cruel world. The design is simple but spacious and serves the purpose. Thumbs up guys.

  2. I traveled back to SA to celebrate the Opening Day. What a great day it was! The sun was shining, the children were happy and the school was finally alive with the sounds of chatter, laughter and children running to greet us. Builders Warehouse, Zandile Manana, Basil Read, Christelle Myburgh and Robin Siebert and myself presented the little ones with their first Tsingo Kids t-shirts, beaded bracelets and special gifts for the teachers. Robyn Weinand from Play with a Purpose, welcomed us, introducing us to the teachers, teacher helpers and the first children to attend opening day. There were cameras and videos……we sure missed Kai.
CONGRATULATIONS everyone……..Opening Day was a testament to your unflinching determination to design, build and complete this amazing project.

  3. With CUSD mission firmly in mind, South Africa’s Book Store chain, “Exclusive Books,” donated 100 Books at the Opening Day celebration. A big thank you from all the children and teachers!
